Gabriel Orozco Launches White Cube's New Gallery

There is never any shortage of celebrities at a White Cube party with models, musicians and fashion designers far out-weighing the number of artists in attendance. The opening of White Cube’s second space at Mason’s Yard in London’s Mayfair on Wednesday night was no exception. Antony Gormley, Ekow Eshun, Peter Snow and Germaine Greer rubbed shoulders with the fashion and music crowd, represented by Alexander McQueen, Bella Freud, Patrick Cox, Alex James, David Furnish and Laura Bailey, while Jay Jopling’s wife Sam Taylor-Wood looked fit to burst under her Vivienne Westwood dress (she is heavily pregnant) as they enjoyed new work by the Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco.

Gabriel Orozco was invited by Jay Jopling to inaugurate the space in what was also his first exhibition with White Cube. Orozco’s monumental, 14-metres long sculpture of a whale takes a stage further his ongoing exploration of the readymade, using mapping and geometry, while the group of new paintings on view continues the artist’s ongoing ‘Samurai Tree’ series, which explores the range of permutations possible within a defined spatial and colour system.

The after-party took place at nearby Claridges, where even more starry guests such as Gwen Stefani and Saffron Burrows, were treated to a performance by the ever sublime Bryan Ferry.

The exhibition is on until 11 November.
