The Next Saatchi Online Showdown Competition: “In Living Color”

Color is my daylong obsession, joy, and torment.  – Claude Monet

Since the earliest cave paintings, colour has been a source of fascination throughout history. As such, its enduring allure inspired the theme for Saatchi Online’s next Showdown competition,  “In Living Color.”

The story of colour is a global one: the Aztecs discovered Carmine red by crushing cochineal insects; the Phoenicians produced Tyrian purple; India brought us Indian yellow, made out of the urine of cows whose diet was restricted to mango leaves; Prussian blue was created in Germany in the early 18th century. Until then, blue pigment had been so expensive – it was made out of lapis lazuli – that in the 16th century only the wealthiest patrons could afford to commission paintings featuring blue.

Much later, in the mid-19th century, the world turned techni-colour for photographers, and a century later, in 1962, colour photography was finally admitted into the art world with the first museum exhibition of colour photography at MoMA in New York.

Given the powerful role of colour throughout the history of art, we’d like to see how colour informs your work. You can submit work of any medium (painting, photography, sculpture, etc.).

Stay tuned for details on judges, dates, submission tips, and more.  We hope you’ll take part in the “In Living Colour” Showdown and look forward to your submissions.

Have a look at my work and tell me what you think about it…

Without Cadmium colors paintings would be life less. Wars and deaths have occured throught history to save the secret receipes for some of the oil color paints. So yes, color is important. History and art tells us this.

I was just advised last week by a well meaning ‘art dealer’ that I used colour like I was using up paint because I hadn’t used that colour for a while, among other evil art words ‘ picturing’ and the worst ‘ornamental’ ! He maybe worried more about the fact I sell and am ‘collected’ without an art dealer making his job almost obsolete, saatchi on line also let’s real artists rip it up it is fantastic!! Can’t wait for the colour show down, power to the artist!, yeeha!

  11. There are two palettes of colour. One is natural and one is synthetic. This is not common knowledge in the greater art community. Lapis lazuli belongs to the natural palette of the Renaissance. The natural ultramarine from lapis lazuli bears no comparison to its modern “equivalent” French ultramarine invented in 1827/28. Ninety-nine percent of contemporary artists work with modern synthetic pigments and do not know about the superior luminosity and completely different chromatic values of the natural mineral pigments. I hope someone at Saatchi knows something about the fundamentals of colour.

      Great information!
A color can be absolutely beautiful on its own, but it loses its ” voice” if it is surrounded by wrong shades of colours, no matter how gorgeos each of the shades might be.
Mattice knew that better than anybody else, or perhaps, he had a better luck with colours.

  14. color is so strong of an element that sometimes I find it over communicates, especially when one is not conscious of its’ use. I prefer human figures to be nude, because clothes communicate, they have a story of their own. color as well (I am starting to feel) has to be taken cautiously, unless one really really knows what one is doing.

I strongly believe that one can learn different techniques, but to master the colour requires something more than knowledge of colour wheel. It requires passion and feeling. It is on the border between knowledge and mystery.

Color as tone, on a gray scale between white and black, it can be as subtle and soft as shadows and on the other end of the pendulum, it is the focal point, where it creates edges creating the definition of form. Color is emotion, thought and feeling and I am so grateful for vision and for the five senses that are intrinsic in being an artist.

  27. Could your software technicians please allocate a unique number to each entry so that as we vote we know that the work is identifiable. I have made collections from previous Showdowns only to find that in the last one there were several works completely unrecognizable as being chronologically in the process. Of course with thousands of works it is difficult to recognize and remember them all, but I think there still could be more transparency and accountability. And at last a theme that invites a celebration of colour.

in living color sound very inoperative and alive, all around us and inside our minds and feelings, but in art it doesn’t have borders now and I am happy because of that. we have chance to mean on colors on different ways. starting the meanings and visions which color we prefer and why or what strangeness and symbols and energy this color have

  54. I don’t like to talk about technique because I like to keep my working ways to myself. Whatever one can get out of it by looking they are free to do so.

Talking about color in a meaningful way would reveal technique.

So I’ll leave it at that, simplicity is key.

Whether or not I am entered into a contest is neither gain nor loss for me.

I’ll start discussing technique once some coin comes rolling my way.

Great idea! Because in most works of art, colors are essential for expression in the art works ifself and for the feelings, understanding and technique by the artist. In my own life of art I always use the colors as important ingredience for my art work. I’ m sure that in all works of art in black/white and in drawings and photo-art, the artist in his mind feels the color, too.
Opposite most other animals, we are priviledged to see, feel and enjoy the magic of colors. But the most fantastic colors we can find, are in animals and nature.

I would like if Saatchi could permit submission of 3 art works for Showdown. It could give a more fair view and understanding for the artist and style.

Good luck for all the artists in Showdown
