Important Showdown Updates

We are excited to launch the next Showdown.  Community participation over the past several months has been extraordinary.  Of course we’re thrilled for our winners who were each given the opportunity to show their work in London at the Saatchi Gallery.  Perhaps this time it will be you?

As you may have noticed, the past two showdowns were “themed” (Drawing & Collage).  What’s more, we invited internationally acclaimed artists, Dexter Dalwood and Wangechi Mutu to judge the finals, two updates that have proven very popular. In that same vein, our next Showdown will be style based- – Abstract Art and will be judged by another internationally acclaimed artist, Peter Coffin.

As we continue to evolve the competition so that artists and collectors alike have a great experience, we wanted to update you on a some additional changes.  We’ve received a great deal of feedback and have made what we feel are very positive adjustments.  Changes are as follows:

Submissions:

  • When you submit your work, it must be within the style of “Abstract” ( you will be asked to “check a box”).
  • Your work cannot have been included in a previous Showdown or Saatchi competition.
  • Your submission (the Original and/or a Print) MUST BE LISTED FOR SALE during the entire competition.
  • Top 300 works must remain for sale for at least 3 months following the Showdown.

Note: an original must be available to show in the gallery should you win 1st or 2nd place.

Judging Process:

  • Your work will be judged singularly, instead pitted against another work of art as it has been in the past.
  • Your work will be judged on a scale from 1-5 instead of yes/no which had been the case in the past.
  • The work will be loaded “randomly” each time to ensure that all submissions receive equal attention.

First Round: Community Voting + Curated Voting

  • The 50 submissions with the most votes will automatically advance to the second round.
  • An additional 250 submissions will be selected by the Saatchi Online team to advance to the second round.
  • This ensures that we have a selection of community favorites as well as work selected by our professional team.
  • Submissions begin Tuesday, February 28th.

Second Round Voting

  • Judging panel, which will be led by Rebecca Wilson, Director Saatchi Gallery London, will select 30 works to advance to the finals.

Final Voting:

  • Internationally acclaimed artist Peter Coffin will select 1st and 2nd place winners from a group of 30 finalists.
  • Top two pieces will show at the Saatchi Gallery London.
  • 1st place ($1,000 US) | 2nd place ($500 US) prize money.

Good luck.  Have fun.

    A giudicare processo:

First Round: votazioni Community + votazioni curato

    1 ° posto ($ 1,000 US) | 2 ° posto ($ 500 US) premio in denaro.

Buona fortuna. Buon divertimento.

I have refrained from submitting my work in the SHOWDOWN until now because the work submitted is required to be listed for sale and I am not ready yet to sell my work and this is stopping me from taking part.

I would be very grateful if you would consider of changing the MUST BE LISTED FOR SALE condition to optional as this would enable members like me to take part in the SHOWDOWN.

  15. Margo, thank you for the changes to the competition and for inviting me. I have been in several Saatchi Showdowns. It used to be a competition about who got more votes from friends, such as I like you and you like me. Now it seems that the voting is more art related. Are the works shown randomly as they were before? Because it seems that this random presentation of the works is based on luck rather than quality of work. In other words, a piece may be excellent but if it is not displayed at the time someone is voting the artist is out of luck because the community voter does not have time to sit and wait until all the works are displayed in the presentation. It would be worthwhile that you please explain to the audience how the voters will see the works. Also, what date the voting starts.
    Regards,
    Jose Herazo-Osorio.

  25. Being cosidered a painter is in itself a triumph, bvut when your work is classified as abstract is an indiscribable honor, (my never ending dream). Therefore, only If I find myself “held together” enough to produce something reasonable acceptable, I will compete with the high standard of abstract artists at Saatchi Online.

I almost decided to stop entering showdown simply because it was about twitter

and facebook networking votes – not about the quality of ideas and

experimentation involved in the artwork. Community voting is like have

cheer leaders – it distracts from the game itself. The new changes should

completely eradicate this system of buddy votes for in-house selection only.

    abstract paintings 2011
    name: from morning till night
this group of paintings was inspired with town and perspective, lights and windows, also nature around us. we can see how town look from cosmos, like Google search, our homes are just some little forms like circle or rectangle with own different colors, depending of the time of day.
every day we watch in others windows, doors, usually closed. unfortunately we can see towns street and buildings without green parts like it isn’t very important. now our world have too many cars and buildings, no place for some green parts to feel it enough in urban surrounding.
this paintings offer some experience like tour from the other world and we are in some plain and see it from other perspective. moon and sun across our small world and lives, up and down, so we have to feel conscious about our surroundings: street, windows and look outside and inside of human construction.
we have place which we own down by step and place where we spent our time, also we have place which is free mentally, like vision how we can create… our geometrical space and box can be like interesting labyrinth when we have to find way out and inside, like a play even if we are not architect. we have to remind ourselves how really we live and behave in our own little spaces…
communication- intercourse; harmony- disharmony, construction -composing lights and dark …
from morning till night – we are drawing some map of our behaving, walking and thinking, opinion

best rule is that rules doesn’t exist, there is only perfect game and concentration.
how to show by art our love to colors and it combinations and forms
this dont have the end like nature plants or others forms how they grow up and died…
