Morgan Falconer On Tom Sachs At Sperone Westwater And Lever House, New York

One is apt to encounter hubris and overreach in large-scale, double-headed extravaganzas such as the one that Tom Sachs has recently launched in New York. It’s hard enough to fill the capacious quarters of Sperone Westwater, and Sachs has filled it to brimming, dividing the space up into ten rooms to show a multitude of very different sculptures and wall-based work. And then he’s gone uptown, mounted a display of works in the lobby and garden of one of the city’s most storied Modernist towers, Lever House on Park Avenue, and tried his hand at bronzes. Together they represent one of the most impressive solo presentations in the city for some months; they portray an artist in his prime fruitfully torn in a multitude of promising directions.
